Fall 2022

The series Contemporary Israeli Voices was initiated, is curated and has been organized by Dalit Katz, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies. The series showcases the most contemporary voices in Israeli society especially in the arts: literature, films and TV shows. The series was conceived in 2002 and is offered annually in the fall.  All events in the series are an essential part of the Hebrew program’s groundbreaking curriculum at Wesleyan University.  Contemporary Israeli Voices celebrates women’s and minorities’ voices as well as the growing success of Israeli films and TV in Hollywood and around the world.

Contemporary Israeli Voices is free and open to the Wesleyan community as well as the general community.

SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL FICTION
Omer Friedlander Omer Friedlander will speak about his recent book, a collection of short stories, The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land. He will share the stories behind the stories, talk about playfulness in fiction, the parallels between jokes and storytelling, and what we can learn from the structure of fairy tales and fables.

FROM INCARCERATION TO REDEMPTION: MY JOURNEY FROM U.S. FEDERAL PRISON TO ISRAEL
David Ben Moshe While serving a prison sentence for selling drugs and guns, David Ben Moshe (born David Bonett) saw a man reading from a book with Hebrew letters. That event ignited his curiosity, and started his spiritual and physical journey to explore Judaism and build a new identity. In this lecture, David Ben Moshe will discuss the many hurdles he had faced as a Black “ex” felon in converting to Judaism, attaining academic education and building a professional career. David Ben Moshe is currently writing a memoir and works as a writer, speaker, and coach.

ADAPTATION: NOVELS, FILMS, THEATRE
Dorit Rabinyan Bestselling author Dorit Rabinyan discusses her novels and their adaptation to the big screen and to the stage. Rabinyan reflects on the translative process from text to the visual medias, what is lost and what is gained, and the wondrous enchantment of seeing one’s story and the characters within it come to life.
